Eaves Loft Conversion

An eaves loft conversion is more commonly referred to as a ‘Velux loft conversion’ or an ‘internal loft conversion’. This type of loft conversion is very simple and basic as in most cases, it does not involve structural work. The loft is converted internally, apart from the skylights that are installed, externally no work is undertaken. The loft is insulated internally, floor joists fitted, electric and plumbing pipework fitted, plaster boards fitted. Then painting and decorating undertaken. Out of all the loft conversion ideas, this is the cheapest to build. This type of loft extension is use for loft storage, an office or maybe and extra bedroom.

Dormer Loft Conversion

A dormer loft conversion is by far the most common type of loft conversion built. This type of loft extension is like the name suggests. A dormer is constructed to rear of the property. This means that the back of your loft will be raised to head height, this in turn will give you much more room in your loft conversion. This kind of loft room gives a wider loft space to play around with, as some properties have good loft height already. The dormer loft extension commonly has bedrooms and a shower room fitted. The loft can be used for an office, a gym or just a play area for the children. The dormer loft conversion does need structural work to be undertaken.

L Shaped Loft / Double Dormer Loft Conversion

The double dormer loft conversion’ or the L shaped loft conversion as it is commonly referred to, can be found on Victorian or Edwardian properties. These types of properties have an extra addition to the rear of the property. The L shaped loft conversion is built like a standard dormer loft conversion but on top of the rear addition an extra room is built. This gives the loft conversion a lot of space, in some cases 3 separate rooms. Structural work has to be undertaken for this type of loft conversion. When building this kind of loft conversion we recommend applying for a certificate of lawful development before commencing your project.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

A Hip to Gable Loft conversion is more commonly constructed on end terrace properties. This type of loft extension is in effect a dormer conversion, with the exception that the loft is converted not only to the rear of the property but also to the side of the property. The reason for this is that on some end terrace properties the roof is slanting downwards towards the side, therefore to gain good height in the loft conversion both sides have to be raised up. The whole roof has to be redesigned and Structural work will be undertaken to loft conversion to the rear and the side. This type of attic conversion maximises your roof space.

Mansard Loft Conversion

A Mansard loft conversion is commonly found on properties that have a valley roof. A mansard loft extension uses the full floor space of a loft conversion. The loft conversion is built with brickwork to the sides and the loft is raised from the front and rear of the property. This type of loft conversion is more commonly found and around central London. This type of loft conversion requires planning permission from your local authority. A mansard loft extension is more like a full floor conversion meaning that it does not feel like a loft but instead feels like another floor on top of your home.
